GP Plantscape introduces Mobilane to its design-led offer

GP Plantscape, the family-owned commercial landscaping experts headquartered in Lanark, has added Mobilane systems to its core offer as a response to a trend towards office design that has plants as a key element.

GP Plantscape has offices across the UK including Manchester, Leicester, Newcastle, and up as far as Fyfe, giving the company a nationwide reach. The company handles contracts for blue chip clients such as banks, investment companies, and facilities management companies for whom GP Plantscape supplies and maintains interior and external landscaping across client sites nationwide.

“We are interior and exterior landscaping specialists with a focus on the commercial sector, interior plants for offices and exterior landscaping,” explains Alison Gilchrist of GP Plantscape. “We complement our core design and installation with maintenance.

“There is a clear trend within the office plant market that is moving towards more integrated office design, as well as more design within exterior landscaping. We find that Mobilane products lend themselves to this more aesthetic approach with the use of plants moving on from the days of simply a plant in a container.

“We see this as a growing area for the business as well as for our clients that are architects and designers and who are specifying plants as part of a wider design concept, instead of something introduced as an afterthought.

“We intend to increasingly build the use of Mobilane products like LivePicture and LivePanel into customer quotes and maintain the systems for them. We have used Mobilane products for both interior and exterior applications previously, and know how well suited they are to the commercial sector and design-led applications.”

Talking about the new relationship, Paul Garlick, National Business Manager at Mobilane UK said “GP Plantscape is the type of partner that is a natural fit for Mobilane. With an extensive nationwide network, and working to the highest standards, GP Plantscape understands exactly where the market is going and how it is evolving to a place where our products have a natural fit. We are sure our systems will help GP Plantscape to better attack the commercial market.”

InLeaf installs LivePanel and LivePictures at showroom

InLeaf, the Manchester-based commercial plants specialist has added a LivePanel system and three LivePictures to its showroom to allow the company to better demonstrate their benefits to clients as well as to other installers interested in becoming InLeaf franchisees.

Founded by husband and wife Daniel and Charlotte Atherton, a qualified Landscape Architect, Inleaf are keen supporters of Mobilane systems. The company will shortly embark on a major Mobilane installation with a pharmaceutical company in Chester that already has a living wall at its office in Uxbridge. The renovation of the client’s office in Chester includes the installation of a 22m square LivePanel living wall for which InLeaf is doing all the design, installation and maintenance.

“Having the LivePanel and LivePicture at the showroom is useful for demonstrating the systems to clients,” explains Daniel Atherton. “However, InLeaf is a franchise operation and we are looking for franchisees. All our franchise events are held at our showrooms, so the LivePanels and LivePictures are useful for educating potential franchisees about the products they can offer that are different.”

Daniel and Charlotte set the company up with the aim of becoming a franchise, which is why they have a showroom to allow themto train people. With a long-term goal to have franchisees nationwide, InLeaf will recruit, train and support franchisees, as well as taking the lead on new products such as Mobilane systems.

“We only launched in February,” continues Daniel, “So it’s still early days. However, they are getting our first franchisees lined up. The industry is very competitive, which is why we think the franchise idea can help other companies compete. There is a growing market for living walls and there has been a sea change in the last few years. The sense we are getting is there’s a lot more awareness, which is largely client-led. For example, the Chester installation was part of the client brief. We are seeing this more and more.

“In terms of general plants in the commercial space, we are finding a wide range of companies coming to us for solutions, with clients understanding the wide range of benefits of plants in the work place. However, there is still a job to be done in educating smaller businesses, which is where our demonstration systems at the showroom come in.”

MOBILANE LIVEPICTURE ON DISPLAY AT RHS TATTON PARK

Mobilane will have its LivePicture XL on display at this year’s RHS Flower Show Tatton Park as part of the ‘R Space’ garden designed by Pip Probert.

“We are particularly pleased that our LivePicture will feature in the ‘R Space’ garden,” said Paul Garlick, National Business Manager at Mobilane UK. “It’s the perfect setting for LivePicture and we think our system will complement the garden.”

Designed for a large family, the ‘R Space’ garden is sponsored by Hulton Landscapes Ltd and Gareth Wilson Garden Design Services Ltd, is both attractive and practical, with a homely feel and provides a place to sit, dine and entertain. Low walls hug a patio area and the boundary is deliberately kept low so as not to block surrounding views.

The LivePicture XL system featured in the garden is a living wall-hung picture system that uses plants to create a healthier and more attractive environment. Due to its innovative design LivePicture requires no power and consequently can be installed virtually anywhere. The benefits of using LivePicture include cleaner air, improved humidity, reduced noise pollution, lower stress levels and increased productivity levels in the workplace. The LivePicture plant cassettes can be changed in moments and need watering only every four weeks.

LivePicture comes in four sizes: The Small LivePicture measures 725mm x 725mm x 105mm, while the Large LivePicture measures 1125mm x 725mm x 105mm. The XL LivePicture measures 1160mm x 1120mm x 70mm, and the XXL LivePicture measures 2160mm x 1520mm x 70mm. The frame comes in three colours; white, silver grey, and charcoal/anthracite.

MOBILANE PARTNERS WITH KENT’S PROVENDER NURSERIES

Provender Nurseries, the Kent based wholesale plants and horticultural supplier serving London and the South-East, has become the latest specialist trade partner for Mobilane, and has started stocking the Mobilane Green Screen sustainable fencing system and MobiRoof green roof system.

From its 17 acre site in Swanley, Provender Nurseries supplies to the horticultural trade, landscaping and amenity sectors, including garden designers, landscape architects, landscape contractors, golf courses, schools, local authorities, professional gardeners and allotment societies.

Speaking about the Mobilane Green Screen and MobiRoof systems, Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries said “We think these are great products that our landscaping customers are going to need. We offer a huge range of products, and we want to continue extending our offering with new, exciting products like these.

“While most of our customers are domestic landscapers, a lot of their projects at the moment are commercial, and both Mobilane Green Screens and MobiRoof have obvious applications here. However, they also have good domestic applications. Mobilane Green Screens are very good for security, have a good long life, and are easy to plant. The system ticks a lot of boxes, while MobiRoof is very sleek and people will like the look this product can deliver.”

MobiRoof is a clip together sedum cassettes system that can be easily laid onto the surface of a roof. The cassettes are suitable for roofs of garden houses, garages and carports. The cassettes are cultivated with 4 – 6 different kinds of sedum and are easy to install by simply clipping together. Architectural adjustments are not necessary.

Mobilane’s Green Screen living security fence system is being widely used by local authorities, businesses and housing developers as a rapid install solution, but is also increasingly finding a use in the domestic environment for use on patios and balconies.

Speaking about the new partnership, Paul Garlick, National Business Manager of Mobilane UK said “We are delighted to be working with Provender Nurseries, which as one of the region’s leading trade suppliers has knowledge, passion and reach to help drive the success of our systems in London and the South East. We are sure that Provender Nurseries and its customers will enjoy great benefits from the products.”

20 Fenchurch Street: The Walkie-Talkie building

Since its completion in spring 2014, 20 Fenchurch Street, commonly known as The Walkie-Talkie, has become one of London’s most controversial and iconic skyscrapers. The 34 storey commercial building in the City of London financial district has attracted tenants from the worlds of insurance, finance and legal, including Shard Capital Stockbrokers – an independent full-service Financial Institution that relocated to the 23rd floor in 2015.

Shard Capital’s new office space was designed by Sterling Grey who worked to a remit of delivering a modern feel. As office Manager Lauren Clayton explains “We wanted to continue the modern theme and do something different with our office plants. Sterling Grey put us in touch with Darren at The Plantman who discussed our options and recommended a LivePanel system.”

Two LivePanel living walls were installed in a single day December 2015; the larger 10 square metre installation in the reception area, and a second four square metre wall outside the company’s boardroom. The main challenge facing the installer was to choose a mixed selection of plants suitable for the very light environment of the 23rd floor.

“Installation was really rather easy,” continues Lauren Clayton. “We discussed options with Darren in October and by start of December it was all completed with the installation taking only a few hours. The walls have been well received by both staff and visitors, and maintenance is non-existent from our point of view.”

To ensure the walls are maintained and the plants monitored, Darren from The Plantman visits the site every 10 days.

Mobilane is supporting the International Conference on Living Walls and EcoSystems

Mobilane is excited to be attending the International Conference on Living Walls and Ecosystem Services, hosted by The University of Greenwich at the Green Roofs and Living Walls Centre 6-8 July 2015

The three day event will offer delegates a range of international speakers and industry-lead workshops, as well as walking tours of London living walls conducted before and after the conference, as well as a networking reception and an exhibition of living wall systems.

Workshops at the conference will focus on; system installation and maintenance; plant selection; valuation of ecosystem services; and living walls for vertical farming.

“This is a very exciting event,” says Paul Garlick, National Business Manager at Mobilane UK. “The market for living walls and green roofs is becoming well established in the UK and across many other territories, but there is still a lot of work to be done in underlining and promoting the value of living systems in the urban environment.

“For many people they are an aesthetically pleasing novelty, however, the full benefits are not always understood. So events like this are crucial for not only explaining the benefits in detail, but also for explaining the practical considerations for anyone thinking of embarking on a living system installation.

“The International Conference on Living Walls and Ecosystem Services is attracting the leading experts in the field and is a must-attend event for those who work in the industry, as well as those with an interest in living walls and green roofs. It is a rare opportunity for the living systems community to come together and focus on the industry and to network.”

The International Conference on Living Walls and Ecosystem Services takes place Monday 6th July – Wednesday 8th July at 10 Stockwell Street, SE10 9BD, the brand new library and academic building of the University of Greenwich, which is located within the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Green gong for Mobilane

We are really excited to announce that a social housing project featuring a Mobilane green screen has been endorsed by the Green Organisation, a UK based group dedicated to recognising environmental best practice around the world. The Houghton Street project in Widnes, Cheshire for Halton Housing Group scooped a Silver Green Apple Environment Award for its strong green credentials.

Designed by architectural practice Denovo Design, the aim of the residential development was to create green homes with a contemporary edge. In order to foster a sense of community and to ensure that people could keep an eye on one another’s properties, the various homes were designed so they were inward-looking. This resulted in the rear gardens of two bungalows facing on to a main road. Rather than erect a timber fence or brick wall, which could fall foul of vandalism or graffiti, Denovo Design opted for a Mobilane ‘living’ screen.

Installed by Lovell and measuring 180cm in height and 51m in length, the screen provides a striking first impression to people visiting the new build development. It also sets the tone for a host of environmentally friendly features that have been incorporated into the affordable housing development and helped contribute towards valuable points in the project’s Code for Sustainable Homes Assessment.

As well as it deterring potential graffiti artists, the architects chose the green screen because it provides a natural habitat for wild birds and insects, and is low-maintenance. Another feature of the green screen is that it absorbs harmful microscopic particles that are generated by motor vehicles.

The Green Apple Award was presented to Denovo Design by Doreen Lawrence at a ceremony held at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindonon 24 July.

Mobilane CPD seminars with DCE

This year we are again running a host of seminars in conjunction with DCE at a number of locations around the country, details of which and the joining instructions can be found in the links below.

Our seminars will be focusing on building a greener environment, focusing on how our products can help to create environments that are more environmentally friendly from installation. As all of our products are installed fully grown their impact on the environment starts from installation.

As focus is turning to air pollution and ways in which to reduce it in a number of cities across the country, and indeed the world, installing products that help to improve the air quality is something a number of councils are starting to look at. With our green screens being a fine example of a way in which to easily reduce the number of air pollutants, namely PM10s and PM2.5 which are absorbed by such products.

It has been proven that greening up the built up environment has a positive effect on communities thanks to the multitude of health benefits. Introducing green spaces into inner city areas helps to reduce the temperature of the localised area as well as helping to increase biodiversity and help to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It can be used to help prevent graffiti thus making the area more inviting and welcoming.

More recently we have introduced the Living Hoardings product which is being leased out to construction companies. The Living Hoardings cover existing wooden hoardings to help companies give back to the surrounding area by the benefits of the living hoardings such as absorbing much of the dust particles in the air that are increased surrounding a construction site as well as to help keep the site looking more aesthetically pleasing as they work and, as previously mentioned as a graffiti preventative. These Living Hoardings are being leased so that they can be maintained appropriately so that when the need comes to take the hoardings down, they can be dismantled and redeployed elsewhere.

To find out more details of this and to hear more about the products that we sell and all of their uses, come and join one of the CPD sessions. Follow the links below to find out further details on the joining instructions. Alternatively contact us direct through the website at http://www.mobilane.co.uk or via phone on 07711 895261
