The front wall of a recently opened European distribution centre in the Belgian community of Laakdal, is displaying the largest green wall of Europe for the most renowned sports shoes manufacturer. The green wall surface consists of about 100,000 plants spanning over 2,000 m2. The green wall system used for this project, LivePanel, consists of a carefully selected range of plants, including Alchemilla, Bergenia, Campanula, Geranium and Nepeta. The innovative new building of the leading sports brand is fully powered by renewable energy from solar panels, wind turbines and a geothermal system.

Saving water The BSI Bomenservice, based in Baarn, was in charge of installation and maintenance. The giant planted wall is equipped with an integrated irrigation system, permanently distributing enough moisture and plant food Mobilane and BSI Bomenservice stated that “The client required a sustainable green wall with minimum water consumption. After an extensive selection process of available systems, we chose Mobilane’s LivePanel in consultation with the architects”.

The minimal water consumption, the relatively low weight and the proven performance of the green wall system in combination with the excellent quality/price ratio were the key factors.

Innovative Mobilane is a supplier of innovative green systems, and the plant wall consists of Mobilane’s modular LivePanel system. The green wall is not soil-bound and contains a total of 11,000 exchangeable plant cassettes. Each row of cassettes is placed in an aluminium duct profile which also serves as a water reservoir. The plants in the cassettes are automatically watered by an innovative capillary irrigation system operated by wall sensors. The innovative system requires little maintenance, is leak-free and not susceptible to breakdowns. Once disassembled, the living wall can be fully recycled.

MOBILANE PARTNERS WITH KENT’S PROVENDER NURSERIES

Provender Nurseries, the Kent based wholesale plants and horticultural supplier serving London and the South-East, has become the latest specialist trade partner for Mobilane, and has started stocking the Mobilane Green Screen sustainable fencing system and MobiRoof green roof system.

From its 17 acre site in Swanley, Provender Nurseries supplies to the horticultural trade, landscaping and amenity sectors, including garden designers, landscape architects, landscape contractors, golf courses, schools, local authorities, professional gardeners and allotment societies.

Speaking about the Mobilane Green Screen and MobiRoof systems, Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries said “We think these are great products that our landscaping customers are going to need. We offer a huge range of products, and we want to continue extending our offering with new, exciting products like these.

“While most of our customers are domestic landscapers, a lot of their projects at the moment are commercial, and both Mobilane Green Screens and MobiRoof have obvious applications here. However, they also have good domestic applications. Mobilane Green Screens are very good for security, have a good long life, and are easy to plant. The system ticks a lot of boxes, while MobiRoof is very sleek and people will like the look this product can deliver.”

MobiRoof is a clip together sedum cassettes system that can be easily laid onto the surface of a roof. The cassettes are suitable for roofs of garden houses, garages and carports. The cassettes are cultivated with 4 – 6 different kinds of sedum and are easy to install by simply clipping together. Architectural adjustments are not necessary.

Mobilane’s Green Screen living security fence system is being widely used by local authorities, businesses and housing developers as a rapid install solution, but is also increasingly finding a use in the domestic environment for use on patios and balconies.

Speaking about the new partnership, Paul Garlick, National Business Manager of Mobilane UK said “We are delighted to be working with Provender Nurseries, which as one of the region’s leading trade suppliers has knowledge, passion and reach to help drive the success of our systems in London and the South East. We are sure that Provender Nurseries and its customers will enjoy great benefits from the products.”

Green facelift for Manchester apartment block

A block of flats owned by Eastlands Homes housing association in east Manchester has been given a green facelift with a Mobilane living wall that runs up the full height of the nine-storey building. The installation is one of our tallest installations yet.
The ivy WallPlanters will help to insulate the flats at Worsley Court in Rusholme as well as enhancing the look of the block, which was built in the 60s and is in the process of being refurbished by Eastlands Homes.

Importantly, the ‘green wall’ will also help to reduce pollution levels near the flats; Worsley Court is located on Wilmslow Road, a busy bus corridor with high pollutant levels. In total, nine ivy WallPlanters have been installed by Hedera Screens to cover 100 sq m of the building. The plants will remove the same number of pollutant particulates from the air as four to five average-sized trees, but take up a fraction of the space.

Despite being 44 meters tall, the WallPlanters will be easy to maintain because of a special root zone in the planters that has been designed to give the plants an ideal environment in which to grow. A sophisticated irrigation system supplies water and nutrients as required.

It was installed as part of a project to revamp the apartment block, whichforms part of a project of three multi-storey blocks owned by Eastlands Homes. One of the key priorities in refurbishing this building was to improve the insulation of the flats. The ivy will help to reduce heat loss from the building in winter, while in the summer months it will help to shield the building from the sun’s rays and keep the interior cool.

The finishing touches are added to Mobilane WallPlanters at Worsley Court, Rusholme.

Mobilane CPD seminars with DCE

This year we are again running a host of seminars in conjunction with DCE at a number of locations around the country, details of which and the joining instructions can be found in the links below.

Our seminars will be focusing on building a greener environment, focusing on how our products can help to create environments that are more environmentally friendly from installation. As all of our products are installed fully grown their impact on the environment starts from installation.

As focus is turning to air pollution and ways in which to reduce it in a number of cities across the country, and indeed the world, installing products that help to improve the air quality is something a number of councils are starting to look at. With our green screens being a fine example of a way in which to easily reduce the number of air pollutants, namely PM10s and PM2.5 which are absorbed by such products.

It has been proven that greening up the built up environment has a positive effect on communities thanks to the multitude of health benefits. Introducing green spaces into inner city areas helps to reduce the temperature of the localised area as well as helping to increase biodiversity and help to make it more aesthetically pleasing. It can be used to help prevent graffiti thus making the area more inviting and welcoming.

More recently we have introduced the Living Hoardings product which is being leased out to construction companies. The Living Hoardings cover existing wooden hoardings to help companies give back to the surrounding area by the benefits of the living hoardings such as absorbing much of the dust particles in the air that are increased surrounding a construction site as well as to help keep the site looking more aesthetically pleasing as they work and, as previously mentioned as a graffiti preventative. These Living Hoardings are being leased so that they can be maintained appropriately so that when the need comes to take the hoardings down, they can be dismantled and redeployed elsewhere.

To find out more details of this and to hear more about the products that we sell and all of their uses, come and join one of the CPD sessions. Follow the links below to find out further details on the joining instructions. Alternatively contact us direct through the website at http://www.mobilane.co.uk or via phone on 07711 895261

Radisson Blu goes green!

When Radisson Blu opened its £22 million luxury 218-bedroom hotel at East Midlands Airport, it was keen to have some eye-catching and innovative features.  To help achieve this, the hotel became the first building in the country to feature a Mobilane LivePanel Indoor system, which they installed in their reception area.

The attractive living wall has helped the building achieve the highest ever BREEAM sustainability rating for a commercial hotel in the UK. BREEAM evaluations consider a whole host of desired sustainable features and take into account not only energy-saving factors but also look at the interior environment.  By installing the LivePanel Indoor system in the reception area, not only is the hotel ticking all the right boxes for the assessment criteria but it has also introduced a beautiful talking point that makes it stand out from the crowd.

The panel used by Radisson Blu is 10sqm and contains a variety of plants which were grown off-site and delivered ready for installation. The aesthetically pleasing centrepiece of the hotel reception took just one day to install and the only work needed prior to its installation was the fitting of some growing lights.  Among the many advantages of the wall is that it has its own integrated irrigation system and is self-contained, cutting out the need for any damp proofing behind the system.  The panel contains a specially developed substrate which helps the plants to establish themselves and thrive. The irrigation system is powered by a standard 240v supply and the wall requires minimal maintenance. Any work that is required is done by Hedera Screens, which installed it.

We have been given some great feedback from the hotel on the views that staff and guests have had about the living wall, all of which has been positive.  Our hope is that the LivePanel Indoor system will fire the imaginations of more interior designers and architects, who will be inspired to incorporate one into their latest project designs, whether offices, call centres, health centres, gyms, retail or business centres. Their potential application is immense.
